AeroFS plays a critical role in educational institutions, helping schools limit their trust footprint and protect students’ PII from unlawful and ethically questionable data usage practices by third parties.

Protecting Student Data Privacy

In the U.S., elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools must protect the privacy of students’ education records. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was originally designed to protect students’ Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from unauthorized access or disclosure. FERPA has been amended to expand the definition of “school officials,” giving commercial companies, like Google, access to education records and other student PII. In 2011, FERPA was again modified to allow government authorities to access student records.

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to online collection of personal information from children under 13. Commercial website operators and online services directed to children under 13 cannot collect PII from children under 13—knowingly or even unknowingly.

However, with BYOD programs, 1:1 computing initiatives, and a growing reliance on online data sources and websites, educators and administrator can potentially—and unintentionally—share private student data in just minutes. Many online sites now shift accountability for COPPA to the teacher or school district. And second-party data mining is quickly becoming a serious concern with student data being stored in the cloud.

Reduce Risk

AeroFS operates on schools’ own infrastructures as a virtual appliance, keeping data within the district and subject to your information security policies. Comprehensive audit trails for almost every action facilitate compliance monitoring.

End-to-End Data Encryption with Trust

Data in transit is automatically encrypted end-to-end for greater security using enterprise-strength AES-256 with 2048-bit RSA encryption techniques. AeroFS can also act as the root certificate authority (CA) and configure AeroFS clients to only trust your AeroFS appliance. This strengthens security by limiting the trust footprint.

Simple, Effective Data Leakage Protection

Schools can know exactly where data resides and who has access to it by assigning, auditing, and revoking links to files. They can stop unauthorized data sharing and remove and optionally wipe lost or stolen devices. Versioning, file recovery, and conflict management features ensure that no data is lost.

Backup and DR features

Because files remain on schools’ infrastructure, they are subject to their backup and DR processes. The AeroFS Storage Agent also allows schools to store and back up data to a central location.
